Experimental forest estate of the Institute of Lowland Forestry and Environment "Kaćka forest" is located in the northeast of the city of Novi Sad and it occupies approximately 220 ha.

The Experimental forest estate serves as a living laboratory and site for most long-term research studies focused on biology, ecology and productivity of lowland tree species, including poplars, willows, ash, pedunculate oak, black locust, wild cherry, etc. It is also a clonal archive of forest tree species and consists of genotype collections of fast-growing lowland species, such as poplars, willows, and black locust. Clonal archives of poplars and willows consist of more than 1,000 genotypes. Clonal archives of black poplar (Populus deltoides Bartr.) consist of a genetic collection of over 400 genotypes originating from the United States of America. Similarly, a clonal archive consisting of 39 poplar clones, originating from 18 European countries was founded at the Institute within European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN). Besides conservation of gene pool, these objects are also utilized for research activities focused on breeding of clones for multipurpose use (e.g. short rotation coppice, phytoremediation, reforestation of degraded sites, etc.). Likewise, the Experimental forest estate has the biggest collection of black locust clones (39 clones) in Serbia.

Apart of experimental studies and conservation of forest genetic resources, the Experimental forest estate also serves for the market-oriented production of a high-quality poplars and willows wood, as well as for the production of forest reproductive material.
